2016 Cross Country
TCS Cougars Secure Second in State Championship
This season, The Cottage School Cougars boys (and girls) cross country teams won the Atlanta Athletic Conference, placed second in the toughest region in the state to qualify for the “state championship meeting of athletes,” and, after running personal records, or, very near personal bests in the heat on Saturday at Augusta Preparatory Academy, the boys earned a hard-fought second place to the ubiquitous Fugee’s Academy.
The Cougar lads ran a 19:55 Team average over hill and dale for the entire 5,000m distance with a mere 3:03 split between our first five seeds to score 83 points. The top ten finishers at the meet earn prestigious Georgia All-State Athlete Awards, and our top seeds, senior team captains Andrew DesRoches and George Barham, both stood atop the podium to claim their just rewards. Andrew placed 6th with an 18:25, while Big George, his trusted and chief lieutenant, kicked hard into the chute for 10th at 18:43, his lifetime best. Frosh sensation, Larry Orsini paced Junior Turner Bynum across the line in 22nd and 23rd, at 20:22 and 20:36, respectively. Stellar sophomore, Brett Boyles burst into the top 30 with a strong 21:28. Shane Hendrickson destroyed his personal best by placing 44th and racing to a 22:11. Rising eighth grade star, Nick Smith placed 56th in his goal time of 24:11 to complete the Cougar charge.
Our Cougar ladies who qualified for state this year, Brianna Worrell (eighth grade standout) and Claire Wylie, (senior team captain) both ran personal bests when it mattered most to place 24th in 26:22 and 31st at 28:10 to complete an historic season for the Cougars. It has been my great pleasure to have the privilege of interacting with these youngsters of such high honor and strong character. Thank you for your continued support of these outstanding young student-athletes!
