10/29 GISA State Championship
The boy's and girl's cross country teams placed both placed ninth in the combined "A" and "AA" GISA Champpionships held yesterday at the Georgia Industrial Children's Home in Macon. The boy's final result is extraordinary because they were missing two of their stellar athletes due to illness or injury. Joshua Farris was the runner-up to Daniel Moffit of Pinecrest Academy. Please encourage the Cougar harriers to prepare religiously for the upcoming Nike Footlocker United States Regional Cross Country Championship held on November 23, 2007 in Charlotte, N.C. The official state championship T-shirt is on display today in the upper school teacher work room and includes the names of the varsity Cougar teams. They include: Janet Keller, K'Lee Brooks, Emily Moore, Stephanie Swetmon, Lynn Berbach and Ava Cutler. The boys include: Joshua Farris, Sam Kacergis, Daniel Mitchell, Christian Hernandez, Daniel Glisson, David Schleier, Jordan Taylor, Madison Freel, David Harris, Harrison Levy and Cass Thurston.
10/23 HLA Lion Invitational Among the pantheon of Cottage School runners, Sam "The Senator" Kacergis, state record holder, school record holder and stalwart Spartan was felled recently by a stress fracture and was unable to compete in the Lion Invitational at Hidden Lake Academy. Unfortunately, other workhorses were absent for various reasons yesterday, and the outlook was bleak for the men of distance to take home the lone champions trophy. In an undaunted display of esprit de corps, the Cougar warriors ran for their Senator with a will of iron. Employing a risky strategy of self-sacrifice, deception and decoy, David Schleier rabbitted for the Cougars and the hounds took after the fox. Several runners from the opposition pursued and suffered first from oxygen debt, and later-oxygen bankruptcy as our lads crossed the finish line in the lowest cumulative time--continuing the perennial tradition of giant slaying. Luckily, our young women won the girl's division by running with tenacity as well! Enjoying an extraordinary reputation, the Cougars will compete in the GISA state championship next Monday. Remember them.
"Go tell the Spartans, Strangers passing by, that here, obedient to their laws, we lie."
10/20 GISA Regional Meet Please assist me in congratulating your 2007 Varsity Men's Cross Country team for being the fastest "A" division school in the GISA region, while placing a very close third to the larger "AA" schools. (Currently, award eiligibility is determined by the top two finishing schools, regardless of their classification). Joshua Farris led a determined Cougar team by placing second overall amid young runners coming into peak form by setting personal records at the important athletic meeting. Sam Kacergis placed third overall out of the stellar field at Heritage to assist the low scoring contingency. Daniel Mitchell, Christian Hernandez, and Daniel Glisson rounded out the top five scorers of the day. The Varsity Women did not produce an entire team and were considered unofficial. Nevertheless, the young women who ran performed their best and are better for the attempt. Those young stars include: Janet Keller, K 'Lee Brooks and Emily Moore. The next competition for the harriers will arrive tomorrow at HLA in the first annual Lion Invitational as a preparatory session for the State Championship in Macon on October 29, 2007. Please continue to support the Cougars in these critical competitions as they seek both individual and team excellence .
10/16 AAC Championship Meet Please congratulate the four Cottage School Cross Country teams for either winning or being runner's up at the Atlanta Athletic Conference Championship Meeting yesterday at the venerated course at Hidden Lake Academy. The men of distance were led by the indomitable Joshua Farris (running with a Cold) as he broke his own course record on the brilliantly hued trails near the southern terminus of the Blue Ridge. Sam Kacergis earned silver in the well run tactical race, followed in short order by the personal record setting trio of Dan Mitchell, Christian Hernandez, and Daniel Glisson. Jordan Taylor and David Schleier rounded out the top seven harriers who vanquished all comers. The Varsity Women's team placed second to Brenau and were led by the frosh sensation, Janet Keller. Ms. Keller was quickly followed by K'Lee "The Kicker" Brooks, Emily Moore and the injured Heaven Carson. The Junior Varsity squads both earned second place spoils and were led by Cass Thurston, Griffin Boven and Thomas Jackson. The young Lady Cougars were led by Morgan Carrig, (third overall bronze medalist) and rapidly followed by Ava Cutler and Lynn Berbach. The next contest for these athletes will be the GISA Region Championship at Heritage School in Newnan on Saturday. Please encourage them to continue to pursue excellence in all matters. Thank you for supporting these great young people.
9/18 AAC Meet at Mill Springs Academy Young harriers from eleven schools throughout the region enjoyed competing over a true (5, 000 meter) cross-country course at Mill Springs Academy. Both GISA and AAC teams competed in this invitational and spectators were privileged to a new course record by our own Joshua Farris in a time of 16:33. Many of the varsity Cougar men ran personal records in defeating all "A" and "AA" schools in attendance, while placing a very close second to the much larger "AAA" Dominion Christian juggernaut. Admirable comaraderie and Esprit de corps were necessay for the team's low score. The finishing order of the varsity men yesterday was as follows: Joshua "Pre" Farris, Sam "The Senator" Kacergis, Daniel "The Man" Mitchell (a powerful up-and-comer to behold) Daniel "Sunshine" Glisson, Christian "The Saint" Hernandez, Madison "The Kicker" Freel, Jordan "Mr. Speed" Taylor, David "Lamar" Schleier, Harrison "The Hammer" Levy, David "Eagle Scout" Harris, Cameron "No Quit" Naquinn, and Cass "Blood and Guts" Thurston. The Cougar women earned a top five berth with strong performances from K'Lee Brooks, Janet Keller, Stephanie Swetmon, Emily Moore, Ava Cutler and Heaven Carson. The Junior Varsity Boys ran well and were paced by Artie Leach who finished strong in seventh. Artie was quickly followed by Thomas Jackson and Griffin Boven. The Junior Varsity Girls ran strong over the 1.55 mile distance and were led by ultra-efficient Morgan Carrig (a born runner) and chased in by Lynn Berbach and Lauren Williams. The next meeting of endurance athletes will be held at The Cottage School on September 25, 2007 at 4:00PM. Please continue to support these young student-athletes in their pursuit of both individual and team goals.
9/04 Cougar Cross-Country Classic, TCS Campus
Please assist me in congratulating the members of our illustrious cross-country teams for their courageous performance in yesterday's annual Cougar Cross-Country Classic meeting of athletes. Despite the 94 degree heat and high humidity, the varsity boys team led by state champions and multiple athletic record holders Joshua Farris and Sam Kacergis, (quickly followed by Christian Hernandez, Daniel Glisson, Dan Mitchell, Chris Schleier, Cameron Naquin, Madison Freel, Harrison Levy, David Harris, Jeff Williams and Cass Thurston) bested the elite from nine north Georgia high schools over the grueling 5,000 meter course.
The young women varsity ran well to earn a respectable fifth-place overall. These young harriers were led by 800 meter prodigy K' Lee Brooks and followed in short order by Janet Keller, Lindsay Kandell, Emily Moore, Heaven Carson and Ava Cutler.
Up and coming junior varsity athletes showed promise for patient endurance as the boy's and girl's squads earned a hard-fought third place. The girl's were represented by M. Carrig, L. Williams and L. Berbach. The young lads were represented by A. Leach, T. Jackson, and G. Boven. The home meet was only possible because of the immeasurable assistance provided by gracious student-athletes such as Daniel Kill, Student Council Representative, Scott Bagwill, staff members such as Laura Finnell, Mona Krishnan, Johnny Webber, Phil Parker, Rob Burdett, and staff and parents such as Mr. Farris, Mr. and Mrs. Thurston, Mr. Kandel, Mrs. Kacergis, Laura Burdett, Mrs. Mitchell, Mrs. Moore, (K'Lee's Mom and Dad) Joe Digieso, Coach Denny Beatty from HLA, Coach Moore from The Howard School, Emily and Melissa McAdams and the generous folks from Eagle Sports who assisted with raising some funds by making and selling top-value commemorative T-shirts. The Cougar harriers will compete again on September 18, 2007 at Mill Springs Academy beginning at 4:00 PM as the Heritage meet originally scheduled for September 8, 2007 was rescheduled for reasons unknown. Thank you for your support,
Allen, Phil and Rob
08-25 Viking Invitational (Ga. Children?s Home)
The 2007 Cougar Cross country season began in earnest this Saturday with a meeting of athletes at the Georgia Children's Home in Macon. Twenty five GISA schools competed on the rolling tree-lined course. The varsity Cougar harriers battled hundreds of runners, hills, high humidity and heat to place in the top ten teams overall. Notably, Joshua Farris defeated all-comers, including last year's state champions in every division. (It appears that the weeks of diligent training in the mountains of North Carolina and Colorado this summer are paying handsome dividends for the runners who attended). Despite suffering some mishaps on the course (sprained ankle, tripping, etc.) and having several athletes absent, the team performed well. Please encourage and congratulate the student-athletes on both varsity and junior varsity teams in their continued pursuit of excellence. Those competing this weekend include: Joshua Farris, Sam Kacergis, Daniel Glisson, Daniel Mitchell, David Schleier, Madison Freel, Harrison Levy, Steven Heitzman, David Harris, Cameron Naquin, Cass Thurston, Griffin Boven, K' Lee Brooks, Stephanie Swetmon, Ava Cutler, Janet Keller, and Heaven Carson. Middle School runners included Artie Leach, Thomas Jackson, and Laren Williams. Our next contest will be held on our campus on September 4, 2007 with the junior varsity competition beginning at 4:00 PM. Please volunteer if possible (we need a dozen volunteers, and have four at this juncture). Memorable, well-designed T-shirts will be available for anyone in attendance at this exciting annual Cougar Classic.
