April 24-26 GISA State A Finals
The Boys Track and Field team earned fourth in state. Joshua "Pre"Farris broke the state record in the 1600 meter, won the 3200 meter (in which he established the state record last year), placed second in the 800 meter to the state record holder-Sam Kacergis. The Senator, Sam Kacergis, placed second in state to Joshua in both the 3200 and 1600. (Top eight in state score points and climb atop the podium to claim their spoils). Jake Utley placed 6th in the discus. Janet Keller placed 6th in the 3200. Joey Van Loan placed 6th in the triple jump. (Jordan Webb missed the podium by one inch in the same event) The 4X400 meter relay team of Farris, Kacergis, Van Loan and Webb broke their existing school record to place 6th in the state. These athletes look forward to competing in the Atlanta Track Club sponsored All-comers meets held at Emory University, beginning next Tuesday and continuing until the last Tuesday prior to the Peachtree Road Race
March 11, 2008: AAC Meet
Please assist me in congratulating your Men's and Women's Varsity track and field teams for competing (and defeating) all-comers at yesterday's meeting of athletes on the crisp (spanking) new facilities at Mill Springs Academy. As is typical with artists, time is necessary for them to create successful works, and our athletes were no different, as both Junior Varsity (girl's and boy's) and Varsity boy's and girl's contingencies competed on the national-class facilities. Some notable performances from yesterday include the following: A victory and new school record in the boy's 4x400 meter relay of 3:59.9 run in splendid fashion by class veterans Christian Hernandez, Joshua Farris, Sam Kacergis and the neophyte, Joey Van Loan. Interestingly, the first-year runner in his first ever athletic meeting, broke a long-standing school record in the 100 meter dash (12.01) and also impressed spectators with his first foray into the jumping events by winning the long jump. Other impressive displays of fortitude include Joshua Farris winning both the 3200 meter and 1600 meter runs, and the spectacular bit of esprit de corps evidenced in the strategic 800 meter run in which Farris and Kacergis took their turn at the front of the pack breaking the wind for his mate until the final 100 meter dash to the line in which they ran two abreast to tie for the victory. (Contrary to conjecture, this was not coached). Kacergis placed close seconds to Farris in both the 3200 and 1600 contests as well. Christian Hernandez won the boy's 400 meter dash and placed fourth in the 800. CJ Cook placed second in the high jump; Jake Utley won the boy's discus with a toss of 103', and placed second in the boy's shot with a put of 36'10". Anthony Isaacs placed third in both the boy's implement throws. The boy's 4X100 meter dash team consisting of Isaacs, Williams, Martin and Van Loan placed a close second to Hidden Lake Academy. David Schleier and Nick Vincent demonstrated enthusiasm and long-suffering with their respective fourth and fifth place spots in the 3200 meter run. Schleier also placed fourth in the 1600 meter run, while Cass Thurston scored points in the mile with a top-five finish. David Gwynn, displaying remarkable improvement, scored two points for the Cougars with his fifth place finish in the varsity 800 meter run. Madison Freel placed fourth in the boy's 400 meter dash, while Jeff Williams earned six points with his third place finish in the 200 meter dash. Kent Chambers earned points with his fifth place finish in the 200 meter dash, while Scott Henderson placed fourth in both the high jump and triple jump.
For the young women, Leah Purdy, suffering from a recent bout of mononucleosis (and persistent asthma) won the girl's 3200 meter run. Janet Keller placed second in the 1600 and 800 meter run for girls, while Heaven Carson placed first in the 200 and second in the 100 meter dashes. Carson also assisted the girl's 4X100 meter relay squad to victory along with Bre Johnson, Roxanna Javid, Lauren Zabroske. Zabroske earned a hard-fought second in the 400 meter dash, won the high jump, and assisted the girl's 4X400 meter relay team to a very close second place finish. Sarah Swetmon placed second in both the shot and discus, while Roxanna Javid placed third in both the discus and shot. Ava Cutler placed second in the 3200 meter run, and third in the 1600 and 800 meter races. Elizabeth Waldrup scored points in the long jump and triple jump with top four and five finishes respectively.
