The Cottage School presents its 2007 Summer Enrichment Camp for rising middle school students (6th-8th grades). Classes begin July 7 and continue until July 27. Students can participate in a one, two, or three-week program. The camp runs from 8am 12 noon, Monday Friday, with a charge of $300 per week. Students from any middle school or home school may participate in the program. Spaces are limited, so sign up early to ensure your childs placement.
Mondays through Thursdays, students participate in:
1. MathScape: fun, hands-on math exploration; 2. Teacher Specific Programs; 3. Investigation Unit which introduces debate and logical argument skills.
Fridays may include a field trip related to the weeks Investigation Unit.
MathScape is an FUN, NSF-funded, standards-based mathematics curriculum for grades 6-8. It encourages students to learn mathematics by doing mathematics, using and connecting mathematical ideas, and actively constructing their own understanding. The main component of each lesson includes hands-on activities in which students explore mathematical concepts.
Teacher Specific Programs offer an hour of specific enrichment opportunities presented by teacher experts. Topics include Media Savvy, B & W drawing, Shape-Color-Space in various mediums, Polymer Clay Figurines, Polymer Clay Techniques and Model Making, Movie Making Basics, Using Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint (all levels).
Investigation is a team project designed to introduce students to debate, logic, and the process of logical arguments. In a debate-like setting, campers will practice exploring topics from many different sides, creating fact-based arguments that are persuasive and informative, creating visual aids, and delivering their sides of the topic in a debate style format.
Field Trip Fridays will extend the Investigation Topic of the week.
